How to measure the ring size correctly?

In the Czech Republic and most EU countries, the inner circumference in mm is used to determine the size of the ring. This will most often be somewhere between 47 and 70. These are also the most common sizes of rings we produce. However, most rings can be made in smaller or larger sizes. However, there are exceptions to some types, so if you want a ring outside of this range, you'd better consult with us beforehand.

To find out this size, you can go to a jeweller in your area who will use measuring rings (ring sizers) to find out the size. You should expect that they may charge a small fee for this service. However, these test rings need to be approximately the same width as your future ring to ensure a good fit. In general, a wider ring should be slightly larger than a narrow ring so that it fits comfortably on your finger and does not squeeze. And if you want a ring with an internal rounding (comfort fit), ideally these measuring rings should also have this rounding. However, the range of these measuring rings offered by conventional jewellers is usually limited to a maximum of two widths.

For this purpose, we have sets of ring gauges in different widths and in both flat inner side (standard fit) and inner rounding (comfort fit) designs. Just choose the right one and order it for testing. For more information on these sets, including an instructional video on how to use them, see our article How to measure with a gauge set.

For more precise measurements use our metal gauges, which are made to the exact size and width you specify. We recommend these metal gauges especially for rings where additional sizing is difficult. These are mainly rings with stones and multi material rings. Here we recommend that you first try on a set of gauges to determine the appropriate size and then verify this particular measured size with a metal gauge.

If you send us back a ring sizer set and a metal gauge after trying it on, we will deduct their price from your final ring order. Unfortunately, with regard to customs clearance, this only applies to customers from the European Union!

We also offer atypical metal gauges, which are available in a special shape, e.g. for "Forever" rings, or with a raised head, which is typical for "Siona" rings. Due to their specific shape, these gauges are non-returnable.

We are often asked whether to choose rings with a flat inside (standard fit rings) or rings with a rounded inside (comfort fit rings). This is not an easy question to answer.  Generally, the comfort fit is recommended for wider rings so that the skin under the ring doesn't sweat too much and wearing the ring is more comfortable, but it also depends a lot on the type of your fingers.  Each person's fit and feel is a little different and it's best to try it on in person. If you can't come to us for a personal appointment, we recommend trying it out on our measuring sets. If you try two rings in the same size and one has a flat inner side and the other has an inner rounding, the one with the inner rounding will probably be a little looser for you. So order both types of gauges from a given width and you'll see which fits you better.

Sometimes you may need to find out the size of a ring you already have at home. For example, when a man wants to surprise his spouse with an engagement ring and needs to find out her size, he secretly borrows a ring from her jewellery box. In this case, the ring size is best measured using an inside diameter. For this, we recommend using a caliper. The ring needs to be placed on top of her prongs for the size reading to be correct, see picture.

If you need to convert the inner diameter to the inner circumference, i.e. the size you select from the drop-down list when ordering the ring, just multiply the diameter by 3.14 or use our conversion table, see below.

What we definitely do not recommend is measuring with string, paper strips, a tailor's tape measure, etc. These measurements are highly inaccurate and unusable.

As we make our rings and jewellery by hand, we are unable to guarantee accurate measurements within a tenth of a mm. That is why we state the tolerance of our production for base metals as up to 0.2 mm and for precious metals as up to 0.1 mm.

Ring sizing abroad

There are several different ring sizing systems abroad. For example, in the United States and Canada a numerical scale is used, in the UK and Australia letters are used. Unfortunately, there is no uniform methodology for converting between these systems, and in our experience, different jewelers in different countries measure ring sizes differently.

We work with the inner circumference and diameter when making our rings. If you wish to have a ring sized according to the US or UK system, please use the conversion chart that corresponds to our measuring tools. This way we can ensure that the ring fits exactly according to your specifications.

Ring Size Conversion Chart

Below you will find two ring size conversion charts. In the first part you will find the conversions to the sizes most commonly used in the USA, Canada and Mexico, labeled "US sizes". In the second, the conversions to the sizes most commonly used in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, labelled "UK sizes".

In both tables you will also find the conversion between inner circumference and inner diameter, which may be useful if you measure your ring size as an inner diameter using a caliper.

If you need any advice about the correct ring size measurement or size conversion, please do not hesitate to contact us, we will be happy to help.
